You may be familiar with the terms UVA and UVB, they are a way of grouping and distinguishing ultraviolet light wavelengths. UVA wavelengths are longer, are unaffected by the atmosphere and travel through your skin to deeper layers. This causes wrinkling and photoaging. Even on a cloudy day, UVA can affect unprotected skin.
UVB is no picnic for your skin either. UVB wavelengths are shorter; some are absorbed in the atmosphere and only affect the surface of the skin, aka sunburn. Some people chalk up a sunburn as the price to pay for enjoying the summer, but with a sunburn comes an increased risk for developing skin cancer.
Because of the twin risks of wrinkling and skin cancer, we strongly recommend sunscreen products that block both UVA and UVB. Sometimes this is called Broad Spectrum protection. Dr. Bandak recommends protecting your skin from premature aging by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher. Combined with a comprehensive sun protection program including wearing sun protective clothing, hats, sunglasses, and avoiding the sun between the hours of 10am – 2pm may help reduce the risk of premature skin aging.
A product like Obagi Sun Shield contains protection from both UVA and UVB rays, and offers SPF 50 protection. Plus, Obagi Sun Shield is a tinted product and comes in Cool, for bluish, red or pink undertones, and Warm, for yellow, golden or olive undertones.
Jane Iredale, the makers of mineral makeup, carries many products with broad spectrum protection, including their PurePressed® Base Mineral Foundation. Glide this weightless sheer matte foundation on for a look that’s just like your own skin, only better. This pressed mineral SPF foundation, powder and concealer is made from micronized minerals, is slightly more sheer and matte than the loose powders. It is oil free, weightless and water resistant to 40 minutes. It contains antioxidants such as Pine Bark Extract and Pomegranate Extract (a potent antioxidant that helps fight free radical production caused by sun exposure). SPF ranges from 15 to 20 depending on shade selected.
